What Should My Summer Thermostat Settings Be?

Stay comfortable while keeping energy costs down!

summer home temp marylandThe cost of living has been going up in many ways, between yo-yoing gas prices, rising grocery prices, and increased travel costs.

You’re also using your home’s air conditioning more, especially with the recent brutally hot weather. But you don’t have to let your energy costs soar! We have some tips for setting your thermostat that will help you keep cooling costs down without having to sacrifice comfort.

Be smart with your thermostat

Simple changes can help you save some big bucks! According to the U.S. Department of Energy, altering your thermostat by 7° Fahrenheit for eight hours per day during cooling season and 8°F for eight hours per day during heating season can save you up to 10% on your cooling and heating costs.

If you assume 10% isn’t much, keep in mind that cooling accounts for about 50% of your energy usage during the summer.

The Department of Energy has information on how to adjust your thermostat to make your HVAC system more efficient while also saving money.

Make the switch to smart or programmable thermostats

Programmable and smart thermostats are wonderful tools for controlling your cooling expenses. You must, however, use them correctly in order to get the most out of your air conditioning and save money on your summer energy bills.

Here’s how to set your programmable thermostat.

Smart and programmable thermostats are reasonably priced and are available at your local home improvement store or online. You can use your smartphone or tablet to monitor and control your HVAC system from anywhere with a WiFi or cellular connection when you have a smart thermostat. Some smart thermostats learn your family’s cooling and heating preferences, alter your thermostat to match these needs, and even notify you if your HVAC system requires maintenance or repairs or if you need to change the air filter.
