The first record of European settlement in what is now Leonardtown is in 1654, when county court was held at a home in what was then called Newtown. The name changed to Seymour Town, then Leonard Town, which was eventually made one word.
Leonardtown and its surrounding communities were hit hard during the War of 1812, when 1,000 British Marines invaded and committed many acts of destruction and plundering.
Today, Leonardtown retains much of its historic charm while becoming a great place for 21st-century living. It’s known for a walkable downtown with many shops, businesses and restaurants. The Wharf area is popular with both residents and tourists. Leonardtown is a desirable place to live for Navy members stationed at the nearby Naval Air Station Patuxent River.
